We are home again home again jiggity jog. Sometimes its the spontaneous adventures in life that are the most fun. We drove almost 30 hours over the course of four days, but still managed to have an absolutely lovely time. A dear friend of ours is doing some amazing work and getting his master’s degree in Marine Sciences at UCSB, so we drove over to visit him and to see a little bit of the central california coast while we were at it. As an added bonus along the way I got to check out two awesome knitting shops! The first was Monarch Knitting, located in Monterey. I’ve been aware of this shop for a while and it was an absolute pleasure to visit in person.
The staff were lovely and the shop featured a scrumptious collection of yarn, including some of my favorites like Quince, the Fibre Company, and Swan’s Island. I also got a chance to pick up a bottle of the new Wool Soap from Twig and Horn (yay! I can’t wait to try it).
We also did other stuff in Monterey….like walking around cannery row and reading up on John Steinbeck, one of Ben’s favorites. It had been years since I had been through that part of california and i had forgotten how lovely it is, and all the fishing and marine history was very cool.
Then we trucked it the rest of the way down to santa barbara. The 75/80 degree weather was a welcome change to the gloomy fall that has settled here at home. We also had some amazing tacos, walked around old town santa barbara and had the most beautiful picnic/bonfire on the beach that you could ever ask for.
As you can see…my stria was my best friend for most of the trip. It matched the california sunshine perfectly, and I am hoping to finish it up in time for thanksgiving weekend.
I sadly missed it while i was off doing some exploring, but apparently the boys saw a pod of dolphins that included a little baby….although i still secretly think they are making it up. But i mean, come on…how gorgeous is this? That little spit of land that you can see is actualy the university campus. Wow…poor college kids.
Anyway, I also had the chance to visit another darling shop before we left town. Loop and Leaf
was also adorable and very well stocked. They carried some awesome yarns, like Brooklyn Tweed, and I got a chance to check out the new capsule book in person.
It was also at Loop and Leaf that I learned that my friends are really good sports. Ben is always great about yarn shopping with me (he knows about the cozy couches and chairs) but our friend kyle, also patiently waiting on the shop sofa and let the knitters try and convince to take up the hobby haha.
See how “comfortable” both the boys look?
This shop also carried woolfolk, which I have been dying to try for ages, so i grabbed a skein and am hoping to work with it a bit while we are driving (again) down south in a few days for thanksgiving.
Overall it was a wonderful trip, but I have to say, in spite of the freezing cold morning…it felt pretty good to come home to my furry family and sleep in my own bed last night. Now to turn around and start prepping to Turkey Day!
