WARNING: EXTREME CUTENESS TO FOLLOW. THE IMAGES BELOW MAY INDUCE HIGH PITCHED SQUEALS AND SIGHS OF ADORATION. MAY ALSO SUDDENLY TRANSFORM GRUMPY MOODs INTO SUNNY ONES
okay so you’ve been warned:). If you follow me on instagram (@b.woolens) you have probably noticed the adorable pictures of tiny furry creatures that I have taken to post every week or so. But I have yet to really supply much of an explanation. So here is the deal with the kittens.
Hubs and I are currently renting a house on my in-laws farm, meaning that ma and pa bailey live just across the road from us. About three weeks ago we were at dinner with them and my father-in-law informed me (against his better judgement) that he recently discovered a mamma and a litter of kittens in a drain pipe behind our house!
mamma was pretty nervous and extremely skinny but she was so friendly. I came out to see them and she crawled right in my lap and looked up at me with this “help me” look in her eyes. So, as soon as I could, I gathered up the entire crew and brought them inside….
see the balled patch on moms nose? I can’t explain how thin she was or how much cat food she ate in the beginning.
Heartbreakingly, three of the original five did not make. One of them was already gone by the time I found them in the pipe, and two more went in the first 48 hours. I did everything that I could (and spent lots of hours on the internet researching post-natal kittne care) but they were too small and too weak. The mom was so friendly its obvious that she was once owned by someone, and loved by someone, but she had been on her own for a while too…lots of little bald patches scars. Her sad story is such a powerful reminder to SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS! the loss of those three little babies was awful and it didn’t have to happen!!
In a panic ,on labor day, I rushed the mom and the remaining two to the emergency vet (with my own mother at my side for emotional support, thanks for that mom) I was so nervous that they were all sick…
Miraculously, the last two babies and mom came back with a clean bill of health! one male (the orange marmalade dude) and one female. So…back to my house they came!
Since then they have been growing like weeds. I have christened the mamma “Fernande” (Ferdie) after Fernande Olivier. Pierpon is the boy (named after Babbet’s lawn gnome from the “girlmore girls”) and Tim is the girls name. My husband picked her name before we knew her gender but it kinda fits her…so in keeping with the Blake Lively theme…we opted not to change it. with just the two of them, the babies have become extremely bonded. They are always sleeping ontop of each other and killing me with their general adorableness.
Then, wonder of wonder, miracle of miracles! their eyes opened and they starting to get to know the world outside! Walking (wobbly but still) and purring and playing even hissing!
Tucker, our lab-beagle mix, is absolutely enamoured by them. He has become quite the nanny dog, checking on them with me and sitting outside the door and whining when I won’t let him in to see them. Its extremely sweet. I feel like he is sharing the responsiblities withe me…its nice to have the support haha.
here is a blurry shot of Ben and Tucker baby sitting for me while I cleaned the kitten’s bedding last week
Gustav (our pre-existing cat) hasn’t really gotten to meet them, as Ferdie is exhibiting class “maternal agression” towards all other cats haha. Apparently dogs are fine but other cats are a no-go (maybe its just male cats? maybe she’ still a little po’d at the opposite sex after having to give birth alone in a pipe? I know I would be) But slowly they are starting to get along and we are becomming quite the happy little farmiliy.
Basically I don’t get anything done anymore because they are so cute all I can do is look at them. How do people with human babies living in their houses every accomplish anything?
Anyway, I keep telling myself that its okay because I only have them for a few more weeks. Pierpon is going to go and live with Isla and her mommy and daddy. And Girl Tim is going to live with Isla’s Auntie Hailey! So they will be close but no longer under my direct care haha (cause for some reason ben thinks that four cats is too much???? what???) I say, if the universe so clearly wants me to be a cat-lady…then why fight it??
